A Sustainable Lighting Solution Begins at the Design Table

Responsibility doesn’t happen by chance – it’s at the core of everything we do at Tehdasvalo, starting from the design phase. Our products are built to last and to be serviceable, so there's no need to replace them entirely. Our LED luminaires are designed so that their technology can be easily updated. Customers can also upgrade their old fixtures to modern LED technology, which makes sense both economically and ecologically. This approach saves resources and reduces waste.

We're moving towards a smaller carbon footprint through our choice of materials. We are gradually shifting to using recycled aluminium in our extruded profiles as new batches arrive from our supplier. Since extruded aluminium is our most used material, this decision strongly supports our goal of reducing the environmental impact of our operations.

Using recycled aluminium cuts emissions related to aluminium production by more than 60%. The average carbon dioxide emissions from recycled aluminium are just 2.01 tons of CO2e per ton produced, compared to 5.67 tons CO2e for primary aluminium (Source: Mäkelä Alu, Sustainability Report 2023).

Packaging, Transport, and Recycling – Responsibility at Every Step

We actively work to reduce packaging materials. Our products are primarily shipped in multi-packs using almost exclusively recyclable cardboard packaging.

In terms of packaging recycling, Tehdasvalo Oy complies with producer responsibility legislation. Through Rinki, we have partnered with the packaging producer organization Suomen Pakkaustuottajat Oy (SPT). This organization ensures the collection, recycling, and processing of packaging materials, which promotes efficient recycling and the conservation of natural resources.

Domestically, we rely on Kaukokiito’s BIO transport solution, which uses diesel made from 100% renewable raw materials. This reduces the carbon footprint of our logistics by up to 90%.

We firmly believe that waste doesn't belong in landfills. Tehdasvalo is committed to the responsible recycling of electrical and electronic equipment, as well as batteries. We manage the end-of-life treatment and recycling of our products in collaboration with the producer organization ERP Finland. This ensures that our products are recycled in an environmentally respectful way at the end of their life cycle.
